about

Peter Kahlenborn Trio

»This 9-bar theme was created when experimenting with a compositional technique I learned from Bob Brookmeyer. Here is how it works:

First you choose for a basic character of the composition like a certain atmosphere, a feeling, a gesture or something similar.

In step two, you choose a group of tones that you feel represents your choice. This could be a classical scale as well as a fictitious, self-assembled set of pitches. Another "rule" might be using certain intervals only, some rhythmic elements or special chord types.

However, this technique is not about making up rules for yourself in the first place, but using limits in the sense of "less is more" to "feed one's own imagination".

One of my constant themes is the juxtaposition of harmony and disharmony: how will »beautiful« (i.e. triads) and »strange« sounds (here: large intervals) used equally fit together? Which interesting multi-sounds or melodies may arise as a result? Will it be possible to derive interesting chords from the mixed melody? How about improvising on those?

In the Improvisation all of those ideas can be options. We are always fascinated by what comes out of it.«
